Festival of Pacific Arts
20 July - 2 August, 2008
The idea of a Festival of Pacific Arts was conceived by the Conference of the South Pacific Comission (now the Pacific Community) in an attempt to combat the erosion of traditional customary practices. It grew out of the desire expressed by Pacific Island leaders for the people of the region to share their cultures and establish deeper understanding and friendship between countries. Since 1972, Pacific peoples have come together every four years to share and exchange their culture at the Festival of Pacific Arts. They come from more than 27 countries and the number of participatns has increased to more than 2000.
The Festival is recognized as a major international cultural event and is the largest gathering in which Pacific peoples unite to gain respect for and appreciation of one another within the context of the changing Pacific.
