This forum explores the inspiration behind Shigeyuki Kihara’s Culture for Sale, an exhibition that highlights the disjunction in power relationships between performers and their audiences in 19th-century cultural tours in Germany from Samoa.For further information on the forum & speakers, please see below.
During and after the forum, Culture for Sale live performances will take place in the gallery on Saturday 22 February, 1-4pm. Culture for Sale is a live performance and video installation artwork by artist Shigeyuki Kihara. The work is based on the nineteenth century German tradition of the Völkerschau, where Samoan men, women and children were exhibited as part of a human zoo.
A series of Culture for Sale live performances will also be taking place at the following times:
