My name is Oliver Lueb and I do work at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum – Cultures of the world in Cologne, Germany. I am currently preparing a basic survey trip for my PhD thesis about aesthetics, art and material culture in Santa Cruz, Solomon Islands. 'Artefacts of Encounter' is a three-year research project based at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge. Through historic artefact collections, it will study encounters between European explorers and Polynesian islanders on more than thirty Pacific voyages from 1765 to 1840, and their contemporary legacies. The project is co-directed by Professor Nicholas Thomas and Dr Amiria Salmond.

Loreen Taurerewa, Sleight of Hand

Finding inspiration in the stories of her Samoan, Chinese and European ancestors, Lorene Taurerewa weaves her personal and historical family narrative into her large-scale drawings.

In this new series of figurative, charcoal works, Sleight of Hand, begun during her recent residencies in New York and Seoul, Taurerewa focuses on stories from her mother's childhood.  read more »

2009 International symposium of Austronesian Studies

In October, Sean Mallon (Senior Curator of Pacific Cultures) was invited to present a paper at the 2009 International Symposium of Austronesian Studies, held at the Museum of Prehistory, in Taitung, Taiwan. His paper – 'Too much history? Exhibiting the big stories of the Pacific past.' – discussed approaches to exhibiting the history of early exploration and settlement of Oceania in museums. Sean drew on his recent experiences working on Voyagers: exploring the Pacific (2002) and Tangata o le Moana: the story of Pacific People in New Zealand (2007).
