The New Dowse, Lower Hutt, New Zealand
Gods, Ghosts & Men: Pacific arts from the National Gallery of Australia

Gods, Ghosts & Men
10 October, 2008 – 11 January 2009
Pacific arts from the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra

Gods, Ghosts & Men draws exclusively on the National Gallery’s little known collection of traditional Pacific sculpture. The Pacific arts collection was initiated in 1968 with field collecting activities by Sir William Dargie in Papua New Guinea and in 1970 by Jean-Michel Charpentier in Vanuatu.

Many other works have been acquired through secondary sources during the 1970s and 1980s including the Max Ernst collection which features numerous spirit boards from the Papuan Gulf. read more »
