VISION CULTURE ART RESIDENCY
SHALINI GANENDRA FINE ART
The VISION CULTURE ART RESIDENCY (VCR) for Western Hemisphere artists to interact with and explore SE Asia is now inviting submissions. This program is supported by Shalini Ganendra Fine Art (SGFA), an independent green art center established since 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. SGFA specialises in Asian contemporary art and design with focus on emerging regions and movement. The Residency itself will be housed in the gallery’s certified green premises designed by architectural luminary Ken Yeang. The space has just been awarded the 2011 PAM Architectural Award Showroom.
SGFA has launched a number of successful, cross-cultural initiatives including the Vision Culture Lectures (sponsored by HSBC and UNESCO) which brings international art luminaries to Malaysia to present their practise at free public lectures and workshops. Participants have included: Oscar Ho (curator); Dr. Susan Cochrane (curator/Pacific Art); Dr. Volker Albus (curator/design); Sir Roy Calne (artist); Antoine D’Agata (photographer); Carol Cassidy (textile artist); and Trina Tygrett (art jeweller). Christopher Phillips, ICP curator, will speak in September.
VCR is SGFA’s most recent cultural initiative and aims to develop local and international artistic exchange through exposure with the wide variety of cultural environments and dialogues in SE Asia and Asia. VCR offers shared studio space, a public lecture venue and exhibition possibilities at the SGFA gallery. The program runs from December through February each year and is open to emerging and mid-career artists. Artists in residency are encouraged to engage with the local art community, to develop a collaborative or solo project, and exhibit new work for 2 weeks at the SGFA gallery.
The VCR/RU residency will take place between December 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012. The duration of the residency is 1 month minimum and 3 months maximum. The application deadline is August 7, 2011. Applications will be reviewed by SGFA by August 21, 2011. The finalist will be selected by August 28, 2011.
SGFA will provide accommodation free of cost to the artist for the residency period and 2 weeks for exhibition in its gallery space. SGFA will facilitate exposure for the artist with local artists, curators, art students and faculty members from select local universities.
The finalist is responsible for the per diem. Estimated living expenses for food and travel within Kuala Lumpur is US $600/month. The artist will also be responsible for securing return airfare cost from New York to Kulala Lumpur and travel visas (if necessary).
