Conference: Making Connections: ni-Vanuatu Artists, Objects and Histories

Making Connections: ni-Vanuatu Artists, Objects and Histories

20-22 March 2019

National Library and Archives, Port Vila, Vanuatu

The Pacific Chapter of the Pacific Arts Association is excited to offer the occasion for scholars, students, artists, and curators to visit Port Vila, Vanuatu and make connections with ni-Vanuatu artists, objects, and histories. Our conference – an excursion from the PAA International Symposium in Brisbane – will be held 20-22 March 2019 at the National Library and Archives (next door to the Vanuatu Cultural Centre).

The intention of this excursion is to provide the opportunity for those attending the PAA’s XIII International Symposium (and others interested in the arts of the Pacific) to visit Vanuatu and learn about the role of the arts in ni-Vanuatu culture and society.

We begin with welcome drinks and a private viewing of the exhibition Remix at the Foundation Suzanne Bastien on the evening of Wednesday 20 March. Thursday’s programme commences with our Keynote by the Honourable Ralph Regenvanu, followed by sessions at the National Museum and new craft market – an opportunity to meet and talk with contemporary artists, weavers, and carvers. On Friday we hear about the work of staff from the Cultural Centre. Over both days we also have sessions convened by key scholars of ni-Vanuatu art and kastom, to facilitate discussion and exchange.

The cost of the conference is $150NZ. This fee includes: welcome event, morning and afternoon teas, lunches, tour of the National Museum, and transportation to the market (tour).

There are (almost) daily flights from Brisbane (Air Vanuatu; fewer flights with Virgin Australia) and twice a week (Saturday and Wednesday) from Auckland (Air Vanuatu). We suggest booking flights to arrive by mid-afternoon Wednesday.  As there is no direct flight to Brisbane on Saturday 23 March, there is the possibility of a day trip followed by dinner that evening.

If you intend to come to the conference, could you please contact Karen Stevenson (ks-kf@xtra.co.nz) or Lisa McDonald (lmcdonald@canterburymuseum.com) to register your interest. It would also benefit us greatly if you could register for the conference, as soon as possible (we need to put deposits down for the conference venue, transport and catering).

Accommodation

There are lots of hotels in Port Vila, most of which are close to town/the conference venue. Some have a beach, or gardens, or a view of the harbor; the costs are fairly similar. There are a couple ‘resort’ style (Iririki, Warrick, Le Lagon) and others that seem quite nice and comfortable. I am going to stay at Mangoes.

Mangoes

This hotel is about 5 minutes from the Cultural Centre/Library/Archives. It sits on a hill overlooking the lagoon. There is no beach access, but there is a beautiful garden setting. There are a few pools scattered about, and some rooms have their own private plunge pools.
