Tauranga Art Gallery
Tauranga, New Zealand
Samoacontemporary showcases the strength of Samoan art within the New Zealand and international contemporary art scene. While Samoan artists have exhibited internationally and nationally under the umbrella of Pacific art, this exhibition is dedicated solely to Samoan artists living and working in New Zealand.
The exhibition involves 17 artists. Three of the artists are Samoan-born but have become New Zealand residents and now view Samoa as ‘somewhere else’. This distance allows them to look at their culture through fresh eyes. In their various ways, the artists synthesise their Samoan heritage and their culture within New Zealand, as well as their wider New Zealand experiences, with a blend of customary and contemporary uniqueness.
Artists include: Edith Amituanai, Fatu Feu’u, Graham Fletcher, Niki Hastings-McFall, Lonnie Hutchinson, John Ioane, Anita Jacobsen, Shigeyuki Kihara, Lily Aitua Laita, Nanette Lela’ulu, Andy Leleisi’uao, Nestor Opetaia, Genevieve Leitu Pini, Greg Semu, Siliga David Setoga, Lorene Taurerewa, Michel Tuffery.
