Capturing the Gaze: An Exploration of the Sexual, Social, & Psychological Circumstances of Looking, March 10 - April 10, 2010

Capturing the Gaze: An Exploration of the Sexual, Social, and Psychological Circumstances of Looking
March 10 - April 10, 2010
Mark Hutchins Gallery, Wellington

This exhibition will feature paintings by Raymond Ching, photographic works by Shigeyuki Kihara and Rebecca Swan, a triple screen video installation by Hannah Edmonds and free-standing bronze sculpture by Terry Stringer in a tightly structured critical discourse on the contemporary politics of viewing. Each artist interprets and employs the
power of The Gaze in a totally unique and personal way, creating a compelling and often challenging exhibition of images that reveal as much about the viewer as they do about the artists who created them.

This exhibition has been developed in collaboration by Dr Mark Masterton, senior lecturer in classical studies at Victoria University of Wellington, who, as part of his role as co-curator, has written a challenging and thought provoking essay for the catalogue publication we are producing to accompany the exhibition.
