THE PACIFIC ARTS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER
Number 16/17, November 2004
A Message from the President of Pacific Arts Association
Carol Ivory
First of all, I would like to apologize for some confusion about the newsletters this year. Our regularly planned spring newsletter was replaced (for a one time only basis) with the printing of the program for the PAA-Europe meeting in March. We are back on a twice-yearly schedule, with the next newsletter in March 2005. Until then, you can check for news and updated information on the PAA web site: pacificarts.org.
There is a lot going on behind the scenes at PAA, which should begin to become evident in the near future and in the year to come. Different editorial committees are working on a variety of publications, including the journal, Pacific Arts and proceedings from the last two symposia. Plans are being formulated for three PAA sponsored meetings in 2005: PAA- North America at College Art Association in Atlanta, Georgia, 19 February; PAA-Europe at the Museum für Völkerkunde, Berlin, 21-24 April; and all of PAA at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts, 19-23 July for the VIIth PAA International Symposium. We look forward to seeing you at one, or all, of these venues next year. Your presence and participation are what make PAA dynamic and meaningful.
VIII International Symposium, Salem Massachusetts, 19-23 July 2005
I am also pleased to report that planning for the VIII Pacific Arts Association International Symposium next 19-23 July 2005, at Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, is well underway. PEM reopened in June 2003 after an extensive renovation that has transformed the galleries and public spaces. Christina Hellmich and the staff at PEM are working with PAA committees to prepare a very exciting program for us in Salem. Enclosed with this newsletter you should find the symposium brochure, which includes detailed information about submission of abstracts, symposium registration, optional pre-symposium tours, and accommodations. For additional brochures, or for more information, email paasymposium@wsu.edu.
Let me here personally encourage and invite abstracts for sessions and papers for the symposium. The theme is “Pacific Diasporas: People, Art, and Ideas on the Move,” within, beyond, and back to the Pacific, past and present. We are looking for sessions and papers that will focus on a wide range of topics, such as collections and collecting, both historically and in the present; repatriation issues; strategies within the Pacific to recapture cultural traditions and histories, and encourage, collect or showcase contemporary art in new cultural centers; the lives of Pacific Island artists, scholars and collectors, past and present, including those transplanted to other islands in the Pacific, to North America and/or Europe; the impact of new and expanding technologies, markets, and telecommunications, as well as cross-cultural artistic exchanges taking place around the world. Note that the firm deadline for receiving abstracts is 30 January 2005, and that only PAA members in good standing will be eligible to submit abstracts and present papers at the symposium. Presenters will be notified of acceptance of papers in early March. See details as to format and where to send abstracts in the enclosed brochure.
PAA-Europe
The annual meeting for 2005 will take place 21-24 April at the Museum für Völkerkunde, Dahlem, Berlin. Curator Markus Schindlbeck extends an invitation to come and visit the completely revised permanent installations. On view for the first time are several pieces that were in Russia since 1945, returned to the museum in 1991. More information will be announced early next year.
