THE PACIFIC ARTS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER
Number 18, March 2005

A Message from the President of Pacific Arts Association, Carol Ivory
I look forward to seeing many friends and colleagues at the PAA-Europe meeting in Berlin 21-24 April 2005 and/or at the PAA VIII International Symposium 19-23 July 2005 at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. This newsletter contains summaries of the programs for both meetings. More complete information is on the PAA website, pacificarts.org, which we will continue to update with the latest news. We had a terrific panel and work session at CAA in Atlanta, a great start to the 2005 meetings.

We have several special events scheduled for the Salem Symposium. There are a variety of pre-symposium tours at the Peabody Essex Museum (which are free) and to other venues in the Northeast region (for fees to cover the necessary costs). We hope people will come early to take advantage of these different opportunities to see more in the area. Norman Hurst will host a reception at his gallery in Cambridge at the end of the museum visits on Tuesday 19 June.

We are pleased that Roger Neich and Paul Tapsell, both from the Auckland Institute and Museum, have agreed to be keynote speakers at the symposium. Other exciting news is that we have invited contemporary performance artists Rosanna Raymond (of Pacific Sisters fame) and Vaimoana Niumeitolu (of Mahina Movement) to create an original work to be presented for the first time. We are also pleased to announce that we have invited a dynamic Marquesan dance group, Te Pua o Feani, from Hiva Oa, to perform at the welcome reception. We will be having an artists’ panel as well as a space for them to display examples of their work. So, assuming all works out, there should be many memorable and moving moments at the symposium.

We do have a number of important business items to discuss at both the Berlin and Salem meetings, including the election of new officers, revision of the by-laws, and the future directions of the journal and other publications. We also invite interested institutions to prepare proposals to host the next PAA symposium.

I encourage everyone to register early for the Symposium. Note that the registration fees increase after June 1, and again after July 15. Hotel rooms in Salem are on a first-come basis. Once the available rooms are gone, other options will be more expensive or some distance from Salem. Full registration and reservation information can be found on the enclosed brochure, and on the PAA website. For any questions, email us at paasymposium@wsu.edu.

My personal thanks go to everyone who has been working on behalf of PAA this year, and it is a very large number of people indeed. The success of all our endeavors is due to our dedicated and hard-working membership in Europe, North America, and the Pacific. My best wishes to all, and hope to see you soon.

PAA at the College Art Association Annual Conference, Atlanta, Georgia
Virginia-Lee Webb, Vice President North America
As an Affiliated Society of the College Art Association, PAA is entitled to an “open session” and space for a business meeting during the annual conferences. Carol Ivory and I organized a panel titled “Invention and Influence: Architecture in the Pacific.” It was held on Saturday 19 February 2005 and the speakers were Michael Gunn, Deirdre Brown, Anne Allen, Joshua Bell, and Ludovic Coupaye. We would like to thank all of the panelists for traveling to Atlanta and giving their very interesting papers. We encourage all PAA members to consider participating in the CAA conferences. See the website caa.org for more details and locations of future meetings.

PAA Europe Annual Meeting Berlin 21-23 April 2005
The 2005 annual meeting of the Pacific Arts Association- Europe will take place from Thursday 21 April to Saturday 23 April 2005 in Berlin. Markus Schindlbeck has organized a very interesting and ambitious program at the Ethnologisches Museum, Dahlem, Berlin. The Pacific collection has been completely redesigned and reinstalled and now includes many pieces that were in Russia after 1945 and then returned to the museum in 1991. The PAA website has the schedule of events and hotel information. We look forward to seeing you in Berlin!
