McCarthy Art Gallery | Albert Wendt
1 - 19, December, 2008
Albert Wendt is acknowledged internationally as one of New Zealand’s and the Pacific’s major novelists, poets and intellectuals. His work has been translated into any languages and is taught throughout the world. He has won many accolades and prizes and been awarded numerous honours.
What is not well known is that he is also a painter. He studied art at Ardmore Teachers College, with artists such as Selwyn Muru and Sandy Adsett, but has spent most of his life writing. He returned to painting in 2000 and has been painting with a huge passion since then. For the past four years he lived in Hawai’i and in September 2007, had his first exhibition of paintings at the Louis Pohl Gallery in Honolulu. It was very successful. He returned to his home in Ponsonby in July 2008, and has continued painting with the same intensity and passion. This is his first exhibition in New Zealand, proudly host by McCarthy Art Gallery.
